A Black Hmong hill tribe woman in Sapa. The VIETs (or KINHs) represent 87% of the Vietnam population. There are 53 other ethnic minority groups totalling about 8 million people. In North Vietnam, one finds the following main ethnic minority groups: the MUONG who have been settling in the West Highlands of the Red River for more than 20 centuries, the TAYs who settled in Vietnam since 2500 years, the THAIs whose settlement dated approximately 2000 years, the DAOs who arrived in Vietnam in the 13th century, the HMONGs who arrived in the 19th century. |
