Hoi An was a major international port where for two centuries Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese merchants came to trade. Hoi An played a major role in Vietnam's early commerce and civilization until the 19th century when the Thu Bon river that linked Hoi An with the sea was filled with silt and became too shallow to navigate.
